Department
of Microbiology
The
Department of Microbiology is a branch of science that carries out educational,
research and service activities to identify, monitor and control bacterial and
fungal agents that are important in terms of animal health and zoonotic
diseases.
In our
department, we carry out scientific studies using conventional, molecular and serological
methods to diagnose infectious bacterial diseases in all animal species,
particularly domestic animals. Zoonotic agents that threaten public health are
a particular focus of our research. We carry out laboratory-based studies such
as the isolation, identification and typing of bacteria, and the identification
of mycotic agents, using up-to-date techniques.
The
Department of Microbiology offers compulsory courses such as General
Microbiology, Special Microbiology, Immunology-Serology, Epidemiology, Poultry
Diseases, Bee Diseases, as well as various elective courses and social courses
within the scope of Veterinary Medicine undergraduate education. In addition,
graduate courses are also offered and scientific research is supported within
the scope of the Master's Program carried out within the Institute of Health
Sciences.
At
undergraduate level, students are provided with a foundation in veterinary
microbiology and learn practical skills through laboratory applications.
Postgraduate education and research opportunities focus on advanced
microbiological diagnostic techniques, antimicrobial resistance, vaccine
development technologies, and molecular epidemiology.
Our
department has two faculty members and one lecturer, and our academic staff
provide research and consultancy services for animal health, as well as
education and training activities. The department's routine microbiology
laboratory, molecular microbiology laboratory and serological laboratory
constitute a strong technical infrastructure for education and scientific
research.
The
Department of Microbiology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Balıkesir
University aims to train veterinarians who are equipped with the scientific
knowledge needed to combat microbiological diseases effectively, and who can
contribute to the sector through scientific research.
The Department of Microbiology's primary objective is to educate qualified veterinarians who are proficient in current and emerging technologies related to animal infectious diseases. These veterinarians should possess research-based knowledge and skills, be solution-oriented, uphold ethical values, and commit to continuous professional and personal development and lifelong learning. Additionally, the department's primary objectives include conducting research for the diagnosis of infectious diseases that pose a current or potential threat in our country, developing monitoring processes, and carrying out projects for the epidemiology and control of animal diseases. The Department of Microbiology's vision is to contribute to training veterinarians and microbiology specialists in Turkey who can compete internationally, and to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education and training in line with global standards. Contributing to scientific studies on the diagnosis, treatment and control of infectious diseases at a national and international level is also one of the department's core objectives.
Samples
sent to the Department of Microbiology's Diagnostic Laboratory by public and
private institutions, as well as by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Clinics
and Research-Practice Farm at Balıkesir University, are analysed
bacteriologically and mycologically using conventional, molecular and
serological methods.
